The Money Trail: Why Loss Estimates Range From $72 Million To Over $100 Million

If you have seen different loss figures, you are not misreading the news — the estimates genuinely differ. Early reports cited more than $72 million, then more than $86 million. Bitquery later estimated about $93.2 million across 315 wallets, and another count put the figure at $102 million across 324 wallets.

Those differences reflect different researchers, different time windows, different chains, and the difficulty of separating overlapping theft addresses from the same coordinated draining event. Roughly $70 million was reported in USDT on Tron alone, with the rest spread across Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Solana, and others.

Ledger has not confirmed a total, and has said many circulating figures are unverified. That does not mean the losses were minor — hundreds of wallets and tens of millions of dollars are serious by any measure.

It does mean readers should treat a single headline number as an estimate, and watch for Ledger's own updates rather than treating a researcher's count as a final audited total.
