Did It Spread Beyond Southeast Asia? The MediaMarkt And Singapore Reports

The story widened on Oct. 13, when MediaMarkt Saturn stopped selling Ledger devices in stores and online after a customer in Germany reported an implant.  Ledger said no funds were lost in that German case, and that it had not verified a drain linked to a device bought elsewhere. Separate user reports claimed implants in devices bought at different MediaMarkt locations, and former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès also said a Ledger Flex bought at Singapore's airport contained a spy implant.  Those specific claims have not been independently verified by Ledger, and Ledger has not confirmed whether the European reports are linked to CryptoBilis. Ledger also asked resellers and distributors in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Hong Kong to suspend sales while the investigation continued.  The widening geography — confirmed in Southeast Asia, reported elsewhere — is why the incident became an industry-wide supply-chain conversation, not jus...

The Second Attack: Panic Scams Targeting Worried Ledger Owners

After the implant news broke, a second wave hit: scams aimed at panicked owners. Security expert Taylor Monahan said the newest Ledger-related loss reports she had handled in the days after the incident were not actually implant drains, but owners who panicked and fell for bad ads, fake apps, phishing sites, frightening emails, and scam calls. On Oct. 16, blockchain security firm SlowMist warned of a fake “Ledger firmware update” campaign using the CryptoBilis incident as bait.  The fake pages reportedly copied Ledger's Genuine Check screen and update flow, then asked users for their 24-word recovery phrase. There were also earlier patterns resurfacing: fraudulent Google ads steering users to fake Ledger Live pages, and even postal letters linked to Ledger's older 2020 data breach.  Ledger's rule here is simple and worth repeating: Ledger will never call you, DM you, or ask for your 24-word recovery phrase. If anyone does, it is a scam — no matter how official the page, ...

What Ledger Says — And What Is Still Unverified

Ledger's Oct. 15 account described a highly organized criminal group that spent months buying genuine devices, opening them, fitting custom hidden components, and returning them to distribution through resellers in Southeast Asia.  Ledger called it a localized distribution attack rather than a systemic supply-chain attack, and said there was no flaw in its chip, operating system, or servers. Ledger also tightened rules for its authorized network: returned devices must never be resold, products should no longer sit on open shelves or displays, and inventory should remain in controlled storage until purchase.  It said it is working with law enforcement and that Donjon will examine devices it receives. What remains unverified is just as important to state clearly: who tampered with the devices, at what point in the distribution chain, how many users were affected in total, how much was ultimately lost, and whether reports outside Southeast Asia are connected.  Until Led...
